Newcastle United: Fans react as Matty Longstaff wage offer increased

Many Newcastle United fans have been reacting to news emerging from The Daily Telegraph that the Tyneside club have increased their wage offer to central midfield player Matty Longstaff in a bid to persuade him to reject a move to Italian club Udinese.

The younger of the Longstaff brothers had initially been offered around £15,000-a-week to sign a new five-year contract, but his head has been turned by an extravagant package from Udinese which would make him the Serie A side’s highest paid player on £30,000-a-week.

It is also believed the deal in Italy would see the player receive a sizeable signing on fee.

The 20-year-old, who has started just six Premier League games for his hometown club, currently earns just £850-a-week and contract talks have dragged on for several months.

These members of the Toon faithful reacted to the news on Twitter, as some seem split over whether to keep him, being one of their own, or let him go, given his lack of game time in the top flight.

Meanwhile, one fan claimed that if the offer of a higher wage was true, then it was the work of the potential new owners rather than current boss Mike Ashley. Indeed, the Sports Direct tycoon is currently in talks to sell the club to a consortium including Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund…

What is the big deal … He is average …his brother is average … Shelvey is average …the whole midfield is lacking the pace or stamina to play in premier league, does nobody actually watch the games anymore, midfield is outrun by likes of crystal palace and Brighton !
