Lejeune, who has been plagued by injury at St. James’ Park (as shown on Transfermarkt), played for the first time in seven months on Monday against Middlesbrough U23s in Premier League 2.

Playing 45 minutes before being taken off in an effort to get back to full fitness, Lejeune impressed for the U23s – adding a degree of composure and assurance to the back-line (highlighted by Newcastle’s social media team).

Following his first half cameo, the 28-year-old took to social media and thanked all the Newcastle fans for their much-needed support on the comeback trail.

Lejeune stated in a tweet: “Felt so good to be back on the pitch. Thank you all for your support.”

In response to this, Magpies supporters repaid the love, with many of them counting the minutes until his return to the first team – especially given Fabian Schar’s recent knock.
