Mark Douglas has claimed that he would like to see Dan Barlaser break through into the first-team squad at Newcastle United in the new 2020/21 season.
As per a tweet from The Chronicle journalist, there has been “a lot of talk” about the player as Douglas went on to say that it would “be great to see him break through this season”.

Indeed, Barlaser is a man who has been on the fringes of the first-team at St. James’ Park, playing in just three senior games in all competitions and none since the 2017/18 campaign, according to Transfermarkt.
However, the Englishman has been a prominent figure for the Tyneside club at youth level, playing in two matches for the U18 team before making the big jump to the U23 side, where he has made 88 appearances in all competitions over six consecutive seasons, scoring eight goals and making a further 12 assists (via the website).

Nevertheless, being 23 years of age now, Barlaser will surely be looking to break through into the first-team set-up to finally have a proper chance to prove himself at senior level.
The central midfield player can also play in a variety of different roles, which would be an asset more than anything for Steve Bruce to have some versatility in his squad in case of injuries or suspensions to his other players.

However, the central-midfield position is particularly crowded with the likes of Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey and the Longstaff brothers Matty and Sean at the moment, so Barlaser will have to work hard in order to get into Bruce’s plans for the next term.
