The proposed takeover of Newcastle United could have potentially been handed a major boost as the Daily Mail have reported that the government will not intervene, leaving the final decision purely in the hands of the Premier League.

As per the outlet, Angus MacNeil MP, who is of the International Trade Select Committee, wrote to trade secretary Liz Truss to urge the government to try and block the prospective £300 million bid, but she has since responded that it is not in their interest to intervene in footballing deals.
The secretary also claimed that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) have ceased to broadcast the pirate satellite TV channel beoutQ in their country after it was accused by Qatar following a report from the World Trade Organisation (WTO) of doing so illegally, including the streaming of live games from the Premier League.
However, sources close to the Daily Mail had also said that the government were interfering more as of late in the hope to preserve the United Kingdom’s relationship with the Saudis.
It seems as if the government may intervene if they deem it to be absolutely necessary, but the fact that Truss has come out and said that they will not act on MacNeil’s pleas will surely boost some members of the Toon faithful.
If there was any worry that the government were trying to block the takeover in any way, this all seems to have been eradicated, thus it arguably moves the takeover one step closer to completion.
