Immobile had confirmed earlier in the summer that the Magpies had enquired about potentially signing him if the takeover could have been completed, as per Corriere Dello Sport, via Daily Express. Indeed, it has now emerged that Newcastle even went into details over his potential salary if he made the switch.
Newcastle’s ambitious offer comes to nothing
The Magpies were searching for a marquee addition in the summer in case the potential takeover had been completed. Having identified Immobile as a player who could have provided an instant impact, they made an offer of a five-year deal to the forward worth £5m-a-year, as per reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano.
However, it turns out that even if Newcastle’s takeover had been completed, they still would have been unlikely to sign the 30-year-old, as the Italy international turned down the offer and instead decided to commit his long-term future to Lazio, as per Fabrizio Romano.
Newcastle instead turned to Callum Wilson, who has performed very well for them so far this term, scoring four goals in five league games. That is a better strike rate than Immobile’s two goals in four matches so far in 2019/20.
Immobile would have been exciting Premier League addition
Bringing in a player of Immobile’s pedigree could have instantly marked Newcastle out as a side with ambition to challenge for European places in the Premier League. The Italian won the European Golden Shoe last season after firing in 36 goals in 37 Serie A appearances, as per Sofascore.
His underlying numbers were also impressive, with the forward averaging 3.2 shots and 1.6 key passes per game, as per Sofascore. However, the striker did struggle in his two spells away from Serie A earlier in his career at both Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla, which suggests that it could have been a bit of a gamble to sign him and hope he adapted to the Premier League.
