The Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern have barely enjoyed the best summer so far. Indeed, the punters propping up the bar might have been delighted with the permanent signing of Martin Dubravka, but nothing really has been done that strengthens the squad they’ve had since January.
With that in mind, reports emerging from over in Spain have done little to cheer up our punters clad in black and white. According to Spanish outlet Sevilla ABC, Toon star Mikel Merino has reached an agreement with La Liga side Real Betis, who are reportedly set to talk with the Magpies in the next few days.
The Spaniard enjoyed a wonderful start to life on Tyneside after joining from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, though his form took a severe downturn after a back injury around Christmas time. Still, he’s a hugely popular figure amongst the Geordie contingent in our bar, who’d love to see Rafa Benitez coax the best out of him.
According to the report, the 21-year-old knows he’s only a secondary choice for Benitez and, as such, has apparently given Betis positive indications about a return to Spain. Our punters, however, aren’t having it and hope Merino becomes the cult-hero on Tyneside he seemed destined to be upon his arrival.
Landlord’s Verdict:
Surely not. Newcastle don’t have a big squad as it is and the idea of letting such a talent depart before securing any sort of problem would be absolutely stupid. Surely even too stupid for Mike Ashley.
Surely?
Thoughts?
