Sheffield Wednesday: Fans react as Barry Bannan and Steven Fletcher nominated for PFA Championship Player of the Month award

Sheffield Wednesday's Barry Bannan applauds fans after the Fulham match

A selection of Sheffield Wednesday supporters have been reacting on social media in response to a Tweet posted on the Owls’ official Twitter account, sharing that Barry Bannan and Steven Fletcher have been nominated for the PFA Championship Player of the Month award.

The Scottish duo have been selected for nomination after starring under Garry Monk in September to move the Hillsborough natives to just outside the play-off places, with a run of two wins against Huddersfield Town and Middlesbrough and a draw with Fulham.

Only Nottingham Forest took more points in September with nine from a possible nine, after the City Ground outfit recorded a win over promotion-chasing Swansea City, along with triumphs over Barnsley and Stoke City.

Bannan featured for the full ninety minutes in each of the Owls’ September encounters (WhoScored), in which he recorded two of his three assists for the term thus far, as well as penning an average 80.1% pass success rate for the month.

Fletcher, meanwhile, also featured in each league fixture and wrote his name on the scoresheet twice with goals against Middlesbrough and Huddersfield Town, as the 32-year-old unfurled a total of eight shots and won 18 aerial duels.

The former Scotland international’s efforts in September have already earned him the accolade of Sheffield Wednesday’s fans’ Player of the Month, having attracted 31% of the votes to Julian Borner’s 19% and Atdhe Nuhiu’s 14%.

Fletcher and Bannan now face competition from Fulham’s Tom Cairney, Hull City’s Jordy De Wijs, Wigan Athletic’s Chey Dunkley and Queens Park Rangers’ Nahki Wells for the PFA Player of the Month award.

September saw De Wijs put on a Man of the Match worthy performance against Cardiff City as he scored his first of the term (WhoScored), while Cairney scored twice, Dunkley hit three and Wells struck four.

Bannan and Fletcher cannot rely on the support of the Hillsborough fanbase to beat the strong opposition, though, as some are split over who deserves their vote more…

I vote for Bannan pretty much every time, however I think Fletcher has probably done enough to win it (until the linesman rules it out for no discernable reason). #swfc https://t.co/NM3LNoonhN
