Aiden McGeady is unavailable for Sunderland’s Carabao Cup match against Sheffield United on Wednesday, as reported by the club’s official website.
The winger will be monitored as he looks to recover from a foot injury, meaning he will miss the match against the Premier League outfit.
Jordan Willis and Alim Ozturk are also likely to miss the game, while new summer acquisitions Joel Lynch and Laurens De Bock could be set to play, with a number of U23s players also potentially set to be involved.
McGeady has started eight games in all competitions this campaign, coming off the bench twice, scoring four goals and getting two assists, as per WhoScored – with this number including his penalty in the dying moments to rescue a point against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.
In addition to that, he has made 1.1 key passes and 1.9 dribbles per League One match, showing that he can be a creative outlet for the side.
His main strengths are cited as being dribbling, long shots, set-pieces, key passes, finishing and holding onto the ball, which are all useful traits that could help the side to go at Sheffield United, as well as relieving pressure if they are being pushed back by the Premier League side.
McGeady certainly would have been a help for the Black Cats, as he would have been able to represent a threat for his side going forward.
However, with Ross’ decision to include U23s players in the squad, it is perhaps questionable whether he would have started the Irishman even if he was available.
