Sunderland fans may have been left gutted having failed to beat Portsmouth yesterday but it’s not all bad for the Black Cats. The level of performance they turned in during such a tough clash should be commemorated and on another day they would have got better than the 1-1 draw, but as it is they now look to be facing the playoffs.

After the clash, it was Lee Cattermole who had some words of encouragement for the distraught fans. The feeling amongst the home supporters at the Stadium of Light would have been one of regret that they couldn’t get over the line, but these things happen in football and Cattermole was quick to remind the fans how far this new group of lads has come in such a short space of time.
Having suffered a double relegation, the squad at the Stadium of Light has seen some drastic changes, yet Cattermole has remained and the fans owe him a lot for that. Now, it will be up to the experienced midfield man to try and carry his side over the line in the playoffs, and with a chance to meet Portsmouth in a playoff final the fans will be desperate to keep their chances alive with two more wins before the playoff semi-finals.
