It always seemed like there was going to be one winner for Sunderland’s Player of the Month award for October, and the firm favourite Luke O’Nien was handed the recognition he deserved by claiming the accolade.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who spent most his time in October playing at right-back (as positional stats from Transfermarkt show), was named Sunderland’s Player of the Month after being one of the Black Cats standout stars in recent weeks, scoring in the 5-0 thrashing of Tranmere Rovers (per BBC Sport) as well as playing every minute of League One football (also via Transfermarkt).
Which is why it was no real surprise to supporters on social media that O’Nien was awarded October’s Player of the Month award, with fans praising the London-born player for his achievement as well as taking a cheap dig at the club for not performing that well over the past few weeks.
