O’Nien played every minute of Sunderland’s four League One games in September, as the team picked up eight points, as per WhoScored.
He finished the month off in style, scoring his first goal of the season when he lobbed the onrushing goalkeeper to help secure a 2-1 win over MK Dons, showing his delight with his celebration as he jumped about looking unsure about what to do with himself.
The 24-year-old is a popular man at the Stadium of Light, as highlighted by the response to his September recognition.
