As well scoring the sole goal of the game that secured a vital three points for the Black Cats against a Southend side desperate for points (per BBC Sport), the 24-year-old midfielder pulled off an audacious nutmeg over Shrimpers defender Nathan Ralph in a game where O’Nien was one of the best players on the pitch.
Phil Parkinson admitted to the Sunderland Echo post-match that O’Nien was ‘excellent’ on the day, and supporters on social media seemed to think so too as fans flocked to Twitter to wax-lyrical about the midfielder’s impressive skill in what was an encouraging performance.
