George Dobson had a night to remember on Wednesday, as Sunderland beat Burnley 3-1 at Turf Moor.
On just his second start for the Black Cats, he put in a brilliant performance and even scored the final goal of the game, his first for the club, when he finished off a well-worked corner routine by side-footing the ball past Joe Hart.
He was also given Man of the Match by SofaScore with a rating of 7.8, having made 3 clearances, 3 interceptions and winning 6 ground duels.
When speaking after the game, he couldn’t hide the excitement after scoring and his adoration of the club:
“The size of the football club is just ridiculous.
“I don’t really know how to describe the fans. All I can say is that every time I step onto the pitch it’s just an absolute joy to play in front of them.”

Having seen the 21-year-old perform well during the game, the fact that he spoke so glowingly about the club after it only made things even better for the Sunderland faithful.
There have been some players in the past such as Papy Djilobodji and Didier Ndong who have taken Sunderland for a ride, having not bothered to turn up for preseason training last summer, as reported by The Chronicle.
With this in mind, seeing players such as Dobson and Luke O’Nien, who seem genuinely delighted and honoured to be playing at the Stadium of Light is refreshing for many.
A selection of Twitter reaction to Dobson’s performance and comments, including posts from delighted Sunderland fans, can be seen below:
It’s refreshing to see how much it means to the lad, he’s got the same type of energy and attitude as O’Nien. You can tell by the smile on his face that getting his first goal tonight meant a lot to him.

Was the signing I was most excited about (retaining Geads and Maguire aside). Watched him at home last season and was the best player on the pitch. Will be a great player for us and qualities to be future captain
