With Sunderland losing 3-0 in their last game before the international break, there will have been a lot of anticipation about who would start Saturday’s game against Accrington Stanley.
The general consensus when the team was released was one of positivity judging by the replies, however, there was one inclusion which seemed to stand out the most and that was George Dobson:
Today’s starting XI @ASFCofficial, in association with @aphrodite1994…
@georgedobson97 is handed a start in the middle.
Chris Maguire and @Denver_Hume return to the XI after injury.#SAFC— Sunderland AFC (@SunderlandAFC) September 14, 2019
The former West Ham United midfielder had not started any of the club’s last four league games, as per Transfermarkt, with fans overjoyed about the prospect of seeing him back.
The 21-year-old may not have got the brace one fan predicted, but he did make an impact for the Black Cats as he completed the full 90 minutes.
He won 2 tackles, 3 ground duels and 3 aerial duels, made 3 clearances and blocked 2 shots, as per SofaScore, helping Sunderland earn a 3-1 victory despite the early scare of Jordan Clark’s goal for the home side in the fifth minute.
A selection of Twitter reaction to his selection, including posts from jubilant Sunderland fans, can be seen below:
