Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey ‘won’t be involved’ in the Premier League game vs Aston Villa, according to journalist Chris Wheatley.

The Lowdown: Arteta’s update

The Ghanaian international sustained a muscular injury during training ahead of the 3-1 defeat to Manchester City in midweek which saw him absent from the squad at the Emirates Stadium.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Mikel Arteta admitted that he would have to make a late call on the 29-year-old’s fitness for today’s trip to the Midlands, and it sounds like a decision has now been made.

The Latest: Partey ‘won’t be involved’

Taking to Twitter on Friday evening, Wheatley confirmed that Arsenal have decided not to risk Partey for the clash against Unai Emery’s side this afternoon. He wrote:

“Thomas Partey won’t be involved for Arsenal against Aston Villa tomorrow.

“Precautionary measure due to a muscular injury.”

The Verdict: Blow for Arteta

Partey has been a regular feature for Arsenal this season making 23 appearances across all competitions so it’ll be a blow for Arteta to be without his services for the second game running.

The Gunners star was averaging 2.3 tackles and 1.5 clearances per league game prior to his absence, earning him an impressive match rating of 7.25, highlighting the positive impact he has on the side (WhoScored).

Partey stands out as a crucial defensive player, having made more challenges per 90 than any Gunners star, whilst also ranking in their top five best-performers overall (WhoScored).

The Nike-sponsored player has also shown he can be a threat in the final third having netted two goals this term, so the boss will no doubt be hoping to have him back at his disposal as soon as possible.
