Tottenham’s fight for Premier League survival has reached a desperate stage.
Winless in the league throughout 2026, Spurs have slipped into the relegation zone and now sit three points behind 17th-placed West Ham with just five games remaining. Their fate is no longer entirely in their own hands, and the prospect of relegation is becoming very real.
For a club of Tottenham’s stature, dropping out of the top flight would have huge consequences — not least triggering an exodus of top talent.
With that in mind, preparations for the summer already appear to be underway behind the scenes.
Tottenham Name Romero Price
Tottenham are understood to value Cristian Romero at between €60 million and €65 million (£51–55m), as uncertainty grows around the defender’s future ahead of the summer window.
The Argentine centre-back — previously described as “important” to the squad by former boss Antonio Conte — has been a cornerstone of Spurs’ defence in recent years. However, his situation has been complicated by a recent knee injury that has ruled him out for the remainder of the campaign.
That setback comes at a difficult time for both player and club. With Tottenham battling relegation and facing potential financial implications, Caught Offside now reports that he hierarchy are now open to listening to offers if suitable bids arrive.
Interest from Spain is believed to be building, with several top clubs, including Atletico Madrid, monitoring Romero’s availability as they look to strengthen their defensive options. His aggressive style and leadership qualities continue to make him an attractive proposition despite his injury concerns.
Tottenham’s strong negotiating position — thanks to a contract running until 2029 — means they are under no immediate pressure to sell. However, their final league position could ultimately dictate how firm they remain on that valuation.
Romero has been one of the few constants in an otherwise chaotic Spurs side — which is exactly why this situation feels so significant.
If Tottenham go down, keeping him may be impossible. If they survive, selling him could still be the sacrifice needed to rebuild. Either way, this isn’t just a transfer story — it’s a signal of just how serious things have become in North London.
