Benfica boss Jorge Jesus has stated that he would welcome Tottenham Hotspur’s loanee midfielder, Gedson Fernandes, back to his club ‘with open arms’ in January.
Since arriving at Spurs on an 18-month loan deal back in January, Fernandes has gone on to feature just 13 times for Jose Mourinho’s side, failing to score or provide a single assist.

Furthermore, so far this season, the £12.15 million-rated 21-year-old has made just one appearance for Tottenham, playing 63 minutes of the club’s Carabao Cup victory against Chelsea back in September.
As a result of his lack of game time, Mourinho has stated that he would be open to the idea of the midfielder returning to his parent clu earlier than was initially planned, something which it would seem the Benfica boss, Jesus, is also keen on.
According to Mais Futbol (via Sport Witness), the 66-year-old Jesus said: “I don’t know Gedson very well. His two years were when I was out of Portugal.
“He was loaned to Tottenham, I don’t know why. I know he doesn’t play at Tottenham. If Benfica want him back and the player is interested in returning, I will welcome him with open arms. For him not to play at Tottenham and not to play at Benfica, he’d be better not playing at Benfica.”

Considering the fact, as previously stated, Fernandes does not appear to be a part of Mourinho’s first-team plans going forward, it would seemingly suit all parties if the midfielder did make a return to Portugal in January.
However, the question must be asked as to why Spurs decided to spend £4.05 million on the 21-year-old’s loan deal in the first place, considering how little he has played while in north London.
