Tottenham: Spurs set to unveil Clement Lenglet as deal agreed

NSC Olympiyskiy, Kyiv, Ukraine - November 2, 2021 FC, Barcelona's Clement Lenglet during the warm up.

According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur are set to unveil Clement Lenglet as their fifth summer signing after agreeing on a loan deal with Barcelona.

The Lowdown: Ongoing negotiations

The 27-year-old has been looking for a move away from La Liga after being told by manager Xavi that he wasn’t part of his plans at Camp Nou, and the Lilywhites are the team that pounced the quickest regarding a potential deal.

The centre-back has been in talks with Spurs over a switch to the Premier League for quite some time now, but it was revealed last week that the player had agreed personal terms, with it being just a matter of time whilst the two parties arranged the final fee details.

Now, it seems the defender’s arrival in north London is imminent after a breakthrough in negotiations.

The Latest: Lenglet set to join Spurs

Taking to Twitter, Romano confirmed that Lenglet’s deal with Tottenham has been agreed, with both ‘clubs still in contact on final details’.

“Tottenham are set to sign Clément Lenglet from Barcelona, here we go! Loan deal agreed, valid until June 2023 – Lenglet already accepted last week, personal terms agreed.

“Clubs still in contact on final details – there’s no option to buy clause included, as of now.”

It’s been further reported by Sky Sports that the Frenchman is expected to undergo a medical within the next 24 hours.

The Verdict: Valuable experience at the back

Antonio Conte made signing a left-sided centre-back one of his top priorities this summer, but after the frustration of missing out on Alessandro Bastoni, the boss seems to have finally got his wish.

The 15-cap international, described as someone who will be ‘another brilliant signing’ for Spurs by Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson, has made 158 appearances for the Catalan giants, and so will add plenty of valuable experience to Conte’s defensive backline.

He’s also used to getting his hands on silverware, having lifted both the La Liga and Copa del Rey trophies during his time in Spain, so that could be something that rubs off on Tottenham, who are preparing for their return to the Champions League.
