Tottenham: Alasdair Gold hints at potential Lucas Moura exit

Alasdair Gold believes Lucas Moura could leave Tottenham Hotspur on deadline day.

The Lowdown: Spurs set to be busy

After being dormant for the majority of this transfer window, Spurs now appear to be finally kicking into gear, with the arrival of Pedro Porro now looking to be imminent and Bryan Gil joining Sevilla.

However, they may not even be done there, with Daniel Levy seemingly open to complete a few deals in the final few hours of the January transfer window – and one move could well be Lucas heading out the door.

The Brazilian is not going to be handed a new contract at Tottenham and was said to be set on leaving as a free agent in the summer, but Gold now believes he could well leave today, amid interest from Crystal Palace.

The Latest: Lucas one to keep an eye on

Gold had been answering questions in a live Q&A blog, which saw him bring up Lucas’ future and how it is far from a guarantee that he’s a Tottenham player this time tomorrow.

He said: “In terms of a replacement, if Lucas can get back to full fitness – his injury gives him good and bad days – then Conte will have two players in each position without Gil, so they would not necessarily need another player in that department.

“The only alternative is that Lucas, with Spurs not taking the option to extend his deal beyond this summer, is open to a January move, so if a late opportunity arose for a replacement then perhaps the club would make that happen.”

The Verdict: Risky decision to let Lucas move on

While Lucas is yet to start a game this season for Tottenham, it’s not due to the fact he’s not highly regarded by Conte – as the Italian has previously hailed him as an ‘important‘ player – but he simply can’t get fit.

The Brazilian is said to be wanting £150,000 per week for his next contract, so coupled with the fact he’s very injury-prone, it’s no surprise that Tottenham are willing to let him go. However, it surely makes sense to hold off until the summer.

While getting rid of an ageing Lucas who can’t stay fit and replacing him with someone younger and potentially more exciting could well be what fans want, there’s no guarantee that a new player hits the ground running and fits under Conte’s system immediately, whereas Lucas knows the system and tactics so can play well under the Italian if he can remain fit, so keeping him seems like the sensible move.
