Tottenham Hotspur: Spanish journalist makes huge Memphis Depay transfer claim -Tottenham Hotspur Transfer Rumours

As per Spanish journalist Albert Roge of Sport, there has been a big update regarding Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Memphis Depay.

The Lowdown: Lilywhites make formal offer for Depay…

Reports have emerged over the last week of Spurs making a pre-summer bid to sign the former Manchester United winger, with there even being claims that Barcelona are likely to accept it.

European sources believe that the Catalans’ financial situation puts them in a difficult spot as Camp Nou president Joan Laporta eyes player sales to get the club out of ‘the red’ (Foot Mercato). As a result, Depay is one man on the summer chopping block despite his fine 2021/22 La Liga form under Barcelona boss Xavi.

Despite claiming that things aren’t quite as advanced in regards to Tottenham’s move, Sport have shared an interesting update.

The Latest: Reguilon swap on the cards?

Writing for the outlet, journalist Roge claimed that Spurs, and by extension manager Antonio Conte, are admirers of the Netherlands international – going to to make a claim involving Sergio Reguilon.

Barca are believed to be interested in the former Real Madrid defender as Tottenham eye Depay, and it is said that the most ‘likely’ solution could be a swap deal between the two parties.

Defender Clement Lenglet, another Conte target, is also a mentioned as a player who could be used in an exchange deal for Reguilon.

The Verdict: Big development…

Much has been made of Real Madrid’s €40m (£34m) buyback clause inserted into Spurs’ agreement to sign Reguilon in 2020, so this news that he could actually end up joining Barca comes as a slight shock.

Ryan Sessegnon’s consistent injury problems are a cause for concern, despite his good form when able to play, so Conte keeping his alternative left-back in the Spaniard may well be crucial.

Reguilon has been called ‘one of the best left-backs in the world’ by former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson (Football Insider), and seeing the 25-year-old leave would leave them very depleted in that position.

That being said, signing a proven forward like Depay, who has reignited his career since leaving Old Trafford, could be a major opportunity for Tottenham.

His current deal expires in 2023, and amid Barcelona’s desperation to balance the books, they may be forced to accept a reasonable fee from Spurs without the need to offer out Reguilon.

The Catalan giants actually inserted a mammoth €400m (£336m) release clause in Depay’s deal when signing him as a free agent, as per reliable Spanish news outlet AS, but it now appears to have been a rather pointless exercise by Laporta and co.
