Tottenham had 3 goals disallowed by the officials, despite two of them showing that the goals should have counted. As well as this, Lazio failed to register one goal on target throughout the game.
Furthermore, there have been reports suggesting that the Lazio fans racially abused Spurs players, Jermain Defoe and Andros Townsend and has since led to UEFA investigating the claims.
Even though the fixture should have seen Tottenham comfortably take the three points, it is obvious that despite failing to tally up the goals for the scoreboard, the performance was extremely comforting when reflecting back on previous home games such as Norwich and West Brom.
Whilst two Tottenham goals were ruled out, the game saw Lazio failing to keep hold of Aaron Lennon and Clint Dempsey who controlled the game along with Mousa Dembele.
However, Clint Dempsey looked very effective on the pitch and moved the ball around well. This combined with former Fulham team-mate Mousa Dembele helped to create an extremely dominating ball game in midfield.
“UEFA normally operate a ‘three strikes and you’re out’ policy, and I think Lazio are at first base in that respect, but if (UEFA) really want to set the bar high, if they really want to send out a strong message, then I think they can do so regardless of whether it’s a first or second offence,” Powar told the Daily Mail.
“I therefore think that UEFA could move directly to something like a match behind closed doors (punishment).
“They could suspend that punishment, perhaps, and then if something happens further down the line, then they can trigger that.
“Lazio are a strong club. They have been part of the European football scene for a long time. There needs to be quite a hard symbolic action taken when these instances occur.
“This punishment is one way of waking the club and the fans up to some of the problems that they face.”
