West Brom are understood to be close to the signings of Nicky Shorey and Somen Tchoyi.
Left back Shorey is ready to leave Aston Villa after failing to make an impact on the first team. Making just 24 appearances for the Villains since joining in 2008 for £4.5m, Shorey spent most of last season out on loan at Fulham and Nottingham Forest.
Reports suggest the 29-year-old will join West Brom in a deal understood to be around £1.5million.
Cameroon international Somen Tchoyi is also said to be joining from Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg. Roberto Di Matteo hopes to complete a deal for the midfielder who can play in a central role, or on the left wing.
Di Matteo’s team finished second to Newcastle last season, 12 points ahead of third place. Shorey and Tchoyi would join a host of other signings at the Hawthorns for the new season. Goalkeeper Boaz Myhill from Hull provides competition for club captain Scott Carson for a place in the starting line up.
Steven Reid signed a permanent deal for West Brom after spending two months of the previous season at the Hawthorns on loan from Blackburn. Reid signed as a free agent and has just recently retired from international football, understandably citing his unfortunate history of injuries as a major factor in his decision.
Defender Pablo Ibáñez Tébar, another free agent signed after Atlético Madrid failed to offer him a new contract.
Whilst Di Matteo has added a bit of depth to his squad via the bargain clearance section of the transfer market, the Baggies are severely lacking goals up front. Chris Brunt and Graham Dorrans were joint scorers for the club last season, both scoring 12. Whilst West Brom weren’t lacking goals in the Championship (only a goal behind winners Newcastle with 90), without at least one new quality striker it’s difficult see where goals will come from to ensure survival.

Stick to your glory hunting fanbase and stop trying to comment on clubs you know nothing about.
I think people find it hard to see us goals because they’re not used to the idea of goals being spread around the team and generally coming from midfield. We have excellent scoring midfielders who’ll contribute as much as any striker.
Glory hunting Sunderland supporter is a slight contradiction in terms.
I think newly promoted clubs that rely on midfielders that scored goals in the Championship to do so in the Premier League without vastly reinforcing their forwards are generally the teams that go down. West Brom have brought in Steven Reid, who is a good player if kept fit, and that’s a big if.
Stoke added Beattie and Kitson to join Fuller, Sunderland brought in Jones and Chopra and Wolves brought in Kevin Doyle. There’s a running trend. Birmingham broke it though, but they already had an array of experienced talent up front with Phillips and McFadden, and Cameron Jerome having a brilliant season.
