West Ham now ‘looking’ at Kalvin Phillips signing

West Ham now 'looking' at Kalvin Phillips signing - Premier League News

West Ham United are ‘looking’ at signing Man City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to CBS journalist Ben Jacobs.

The Lowdown: Hammers linked before…

The England international has been courted by David Moyes‘ side before, namely in the summer of 2022, when he was thought to be a real transfer target for West Ham.

Phillips opted against a move to east London last year, though, instead putting pen to paper on a £45-50 million move to Man City.

The former Leeds star has struggled in his first season at Eastlands through a combination of both fitness issues and lying behind mainstay Rodri in Pep Guardiola’s pecking order.

Phillips, as a result, has been linked with a potential move away from City just eight months after his move from Elland Road.

The Latest: Jacobs makes West Ham claim…

Speaking to TEAMtalk, reporter Jacobs has claimed that West Ham are looking at signing Phillips considering the 27-year-old could in fact depart City.

He explained:

“My understanding is that Phillips himself would like to fight and try and get into the team.

“But it hasn’t been an easy transfer because when he first made the move, I think the feeling was that he’d done enough at Leeds and shown enough that Man City would be using him more regularly.

“So there is a possibility that if the right offer comes in, Man City might consider an early exit, but it’s not advanced at this point.

“From City’s point of view, they still want to assess how he actually develops because he’s relatively new at the football club,” continued Jacobs.

“So it’s not a given that Kalvin Phillips will leave, but it hasn’t worked out as all parties had hoped. Up until this point, there’s still time to change the narrative but it’s not unthinkable come the summer, that he’ll exit and West Ham are one of the Premier League clubs looking.”

The Verdict: Great player…

The Englishman was a pivotal figure under Gareth Southgate when the Three Lions reached a European Championship final in 2021.

Phillips was praised for his dynamism alongside current West Ham star Declan Rice during that tournament, and if the Irons stay up, he could be a brilliant replacement for the latter man.

Rice is widely expected to leave West Ham this summer and City’s bit-part £150,000-per-week ace could come in as a ready-made heir.

However, given Moyes is currently battling relegation, much will depend on whether they maintain their top flight status.
