Speaking in a press conference ahead of West Ham United’s trip to Leeds United this evening, manager David Moyes confirmed striker Michail Antonio looks likely to miss the match due to his recovery from a fitness problem – coming as a ‘massive blow‘ to the Irons as they aim to bounce back from their Man United defeat.
Which striker should West Ham sign in January?
Antonio looks set to miss Leeds
Antonio, who started for the first time during their 2-1 win against Aston Villa just under a fortnight ago, only just coming back from a hamstring injury, now looks set to miss Leeds tonight as another absence alongside fellow star Aaron Masuaku – with the latter man surprisingly announcing his career-saving surgery on social media.
This comes as another setback for Moyes as he aims to guide West Ham back to winning ways against the Whites, with the Scotsman now more than likely to miss Antonio whilst having to play polarising forward Sebastien Haller in his stead.
Transfer Tavern take
The Englishman’s absence could come as a ‘massive blow‘, as described by Darren Bent, especially given he has been one of the Hammers’ standout performers when able to play.
Indeed, he has so far bagged three goals in seven Premier League starts, but his energy and hunting down up front arguably make him a more important asset for Moyes.
As the Irons boss aims to continue West Ham’s solid run of form, coming as talks surround a potential new deal, this could indeed be a huge setback for Moyes pre-Leeds.
Haller looks like he could take the mantle against Marcelo Bielsa’s side, and supporters will be hoping he can do the job.
