West Ham United manager David Moyes is under pressure from the Hammers’ board after a disappointing start to the season has succeeded their huge spending spree, according to former top flight forward Noel Whelan.

The Lowdown: West Ham’s results

After six games played in the Premier League this season, the Irons sit in 18th place in the league table.

The Hammers have won one, drawn one and lost four, having also conceded a minus five goal difference.

This follows a busy summer transfer window for the club, in which West Ham welcomed eight new arrivals. Having spent a staggering £163.8m, the east London outfit were the league’s third-biggest spenders, behind Chelsea and Manchester United.

The Latest: Whelan’s claim

Whelan, who now works behind-the-scenes for Leeds, believes the board at West Ham will be expecting a quick turnaround from this poor run of form, given the money they spent in the transfer market.

Speaking with Football Insider, the former BBC Radio pundit claimed:

“They’ve had a slow start to the season, as have a number of teams.

“I think David Moyes would’ve expected a better start – but it just goes to show how competitive the Premier League is.

“No results are going to go your way just because you’ve spent big money – that’s not how it works.

“Moyes is going to have to earn his corn by turning this season around and bedding these new players in.

“It’s a results-driven business. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done in the past. The board will be piling the pressure on to get results.

“They’ll want West Ham in a position which reflects the amount of money spent. They’ll want things turned around very quickly.”

The Verdict: Busy schedule

The Hammers are set to undertake a busy schedule in the coming months as they try to juggle the English top-flight, domestic cup competitions and the UEFA Europa Conference League.

The Irons are currently preparing to face off against Silkeborg on Thursday night as they look to build upon their previous European victory over FCSB.

Whilst it will be important for Moyes’ side to perform well in the competition, all eyes will be on the Premier League, after a disappointing end to last season saw them miss out on a top-six finish by two points.
