Sunderland: Fans react to the club taking Wouter Verstraaten on trial

Sunderland have been dealt a significant problem with the injury to Bailey Wright, and Phil Parkinson has said he may have to bring another defender (per the Chronicle) into the squad.

The ankle injury sustained by the Bristol City loanee looks set to sideline the centre-back for 8-12 weeks, leaving the Black Cats a little short of depth at the back. Parkinson has stated that he isn’t afraid to dip into the free-agent market, and now it has emerged (via Roker Report) that former PSV defender Wouter Verstraaten is on trial at the club.

Verstraaten currently plies his trade at South Shields which means it would be a significant step up to play in League One, but desperate times call for such measures.

The Black Cats’ boss has clearly implemented an effective defensive strategy as his team have conceded just two goals in eight games, and therefore he will be confident that a new signing will be able to slot in comfortably.

Here are some of the reactions to the news that the Dutchman is on trial with the north-east outfit.
