Spurs are a little off the pace in the Premier League right now and don’t their fans here in the Transfer Tavern know it!

Going into their game tonight Spurs are ten points behind leaders Chelsea and it seems like the lead is just too big to make up.

It’s going to be difficult, for sure, for Mauricio Pochettino’s side to catch up to the increasingly runaway leaders but the way things have been the last few years, you can never rule anyone in or out.

And, with us now in the January transfer window, this is an important time for Tottenham as it will be for every other side in the division to make improvements. Pochettino needs to bring in some names that can help them make up the gap between now and May and there are a few names that have been going around the pub that supporters would like to see at the club.

But there are also things that Spurs will need to get right in the window if they are to have success this season.

So with that in mind, here’s three mistakes Spurs simply must avoid in the January transfer market…

Overspending on below-average players

We’ve seen it in Spurs’ transfer windows in seasons past – they seem to be a club that spend big on players that are no better than what they already have on the books.

Possibly the biggest example was the money used when Gareth Bale left the club – whilst some of the names have gone onto become an important part of the team, the likes of Etienne Capoue, Roberto Soldado, Paulinho and Nacer Chadli were all extremely average and have all since left.

Pochettino needs to pinpoint his in-comings and use them to really improve the team, not to become more deadwood that they don’t need.

Not bringing in someone to support Harry Kane

The signing of Vincent Janssen this summer has proved to be an extremely ineffective move so far and what Spurs need is a man that can come in and take some of the burden off Harry Kane.

If he gets injured, loses some form or gets suspended, you don’t get the feeling Janssen would be able to fire Spurs to victory in games. Spurs need a big name striker that can score goals alongside the main man Kane.

Not getting players that can sustain a Champions League push

Spurs fell at the group stages of the Champions League this season and for their supporters, it’s been another year of disappointment in Europe.

If Pochettino is to have a chance of getting further in the competition in the future he needs a bigger squad with more quality running through the spine of it.

It might only be January but Spurs need to be thinking ahead even now.
