Despite succumbing to perhaps the most avoidable relegation of all time, there is a strange air of excitement at Newcastle United.
Indicative of just how crazy the North East giants are, they are closing in on a sensational deal that would see Rafa Benitez stay on in charge at St. James’ Park as they begin life in the second tier.
Keep in mind, Benitez was in charge of Real Madrid as recently as January.
So oddly enough, even though they will be playing Championship football next season, it promises to be an exciting summer on Tyneside.
If the Spaniards stays of course.
Clearly, the Magpies are in line to lose a few players as they look to jump ship, though the sway their potential manager holds should keep many of their talented stars.
However, who could they buy? Sure, they’ll have to reconsider their transfer targets, but there are some pressing issues Benitez will need to sort out.

Daniel Agger
Daniel Agger was a favourite of Benitez during his time in charge of Liverpool, though the Dane was let go during the Brendan Rodgers era.
He’s been linked with a move from Brondby to help the Magpies’ cause and would be wonderful cover for the likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Chancel Mbemba should they be kept on.
Lee Tomlin
Yes, Lee Tomlin.
Not the most glamorous of names, but the 27-year old attacking midfielder is proving what a good player he is in the Championship.
On loan at Bristol City following an indifferent spell with Bournemouth, the former Middlesbrough man can be everything Siem De Jong wasn’t. At this level anyway.

Now that Brighton won’t be in the Premier League this season, the Toon would be well advised into making a move for Brighton defender Lewis Dunk.
With Newcastle’s defence being such an utter shambles, the North East giants could certainly use the stoic services of the 24-year old.
