Aston Villa fell to a 3-0 defeat against reigning European champions Chelsea on Saturday evening.
Romelu Lukaku’s double, either side of a goal from Mateo Kovacic, secured three points for Thomas Tuchel’s side at Stamford Bridge.
The defeat leaves Villa in 12th place, with just a solitary victory on the board from their first four Premier League matches. This time last season, the Midlands outfit boasted a 100% record (via BBC Sport).
Chelsea just the start of tricky run
Villa may struggle to improve their position before the next international break. Their next three games see them face Everton, who have collected seven points from possible nine so far, and two of the so-called ‘big six’ in the form of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Having spent just short of £90m on new recruits during the summer, Villa will be looking to improve on their 11th-placed finish from last season.
Smith’s post-match interview, which was shared by the official Aston Villa Twitter channel, drew frustrated responses from some supporters, who tired of comments such as Villa taking “a lot of belief from the game”, being “proud” of the players and hailing his team’s “excellent” quality of football despite the negative result.
Villa fans flock to Smith’s comments
“I love how he brings up ‘Their 96million pound striker’ As if we didn’t have 100mil to spend”
“Smith laughing away with 5 minutes left. Glad he finds it funny.”
“Mings will always do this… I’ve said it from day one!! Drop him or you will lose your job”
“We take a lot of belief… but no points”
“Less talking, more wins thanks”
“How about some wins pal, we want Europe”
