And a number of Villa supporters have been reacting to the news on social media.
The 29-year-old has been named in Argentina’s 30-man squad to face Paraguay, Uruguay and Peru between October 8 and 15, but Villa teammate Emiliano Buendia has been left out.
Should Villa stop Martinez going away?
No, let him represent his country!
The goalkeeper is set to link up with his national side following this weekend’s clash with Tottenham, and it seems as if Dean Smith could be without the 29-year-old for the club’s first game back after the international window.
Martinez missed the game against Chelsea earlier this month due to quarantine rules, and according to TyC Sports (via Sport Witness), he will need to isolate for five days when returning directly to the UK.
Should he feature in all three games for Argentina, he is set to miss Villa’s first game back after the break, which is at home to Midlands rivals Wolves on Ocotber 16.
Villa fans react
@villareport shared TyC Sports’ five-day claim on Twitter on Tuesday evening. Here is what these Villa fans had to say in reply, with many not happy at the prospect of being without their first-choice goalkeeper for a derby clash.
“Times like this where I wish we kept Tom Heaton as a backup keeper, sigh….”
“Haven’t we learnt our lesson?”
“We haven’t learnt from last time, other clubs didn’t let their players go. So why are Villa???”
“He will miss Wolves at Villa Park if staying for Peru game on 15th”
“wait so is he missing a game or no”
“Please be back for Wolves game, we know what happened last time Jed played against them ”
