The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are loving life at the moment. The spoils went to Mauricio Pochettino’s side in the North London derby on Saturday, and our resident Lilywhites partied long into the night as a result.
He said: “…can Spurs really expect to keep this player [Kane] without winning a trophy in return?”.
It’s certainly a bold point, but it is one that makes sense.
Whilst the likes of Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea have spent massive sums of money over the last few years as they look to build title-winning teams, Tottenham have remained fairly conservative in the summer months.
In some ways, that’s a credit to them. They’ve, instead, focused on buying low and placed an emphasis on youth – and that has resulted in a few close calls at the top of the Premier League table. However, their lack of trophies over the last few years does suggest that more world-class quality is needed – and so a happy medium needs to be found.
Crooks certainly falls into the latter camp, and in truth, the prospect of Kane departing the club isn’t an unrealistic one. Whilst it’s unlikely in the short-term, they need to win trophies to sign and hold on to Europe’s best – and Kane will have no shortage of suitors.
Landlord’s Verdict
You can’t disagree with Crooks here. Kane clearly loves it at Tottenham, but he will know that a move to Real Madrid or Barcelona could be on the horizon if he keeps impressing.
He’ll want to test himself at the highest level, and Spurs clearly aren’t there yet.
That being said, there has been significant growth over the last few years. They’re back in Europe and they continue to challenge at the top. They need to take it to the next level, though – and fast.
