Firepower: The 1 player that could take Newcastle’s attack to the next level

It’s been a decent season from Newcastle, with the fans in the Transfer Tavern generally satisfied with what they’ve seen.

There have a been a few bright sparks, like Rafael Benitez’s management and the fine form of Kenedy, but there have also been a few negatives to come out of St James’ Park this season.

Perhaps most evidently, Newcastle have a few problems going forward. They’ve scored 36 goals this season, which is at the lower end of the other teams around them, and that has cost them on more than one occasion this season.

As a result, bringing in a new forward should, naturally, be a priority for Rafael Benitez. He needs to get his team firing more regularly, especially if they are to get back to their prolific Alan Shearer-led years.

Having retained their Premier League status, they may be able to bring a better calibre of player to the club this summer, but looking closer to home could make more sense. Our landlord has suggested that West Brom’s Salomon Rondon could be a decent choice.

Rondon, of course, has been relegated this season with West Brom, and a player of his quality will no doubt be keen to make the jump back into the Premier League quickly. As such, a move to St James’ Park may appeal to him.

For his part, Rondon has proven over the last few years that he is a more than capable goalscorer. He’s scored 8 goals so far this season, which whilst not a particularly impressive return, that does suggest that he knows where the goal is. What’s more, it must be noted that he scored that many in a team that has scored just 31 goals in total – meaning that he scored around 1/4 of their goals. Naturally, at a team like Newcastle, he would be able to score more.

Also, at a very tall 186cm, his aerial presence is a huge part of his game. Not only does this allow him to score headed goals, but it also makes him a real threat from set pieces.

Newcastle need to bring in a goalscorer, and Rondon would certainly fit the bill.
