Southampton supporters have been slightly more upbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side produced an improved performance to draw 1-1 with Champions League-chasing Tottenham at St Mary’s on Sunday.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men went into their clash with the North London outfit having failed to win any of their previous ten Premier League matches, a run of form which saw them slip into the divisions bottom three prior to kick off. And although they didn’t end that frustrating streak on Sunday, the Saints were much better and deservedly drew with Mauricio Pochettino’s side, with a Davinson Sanchez own goal giving the hosts an early lead, only for Harry Kane’s 99th Premier League strike to preserve a point for Spurs.
Nonetheless, there have been some optimistic Southampton fans in the Tavern in recent days, many of whom are hoping that a much-improved display against Tottenham can kickstart their season, and thus their bid to avoid relegation to the Championship.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Saints supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that they have agreed a fee with Monaco for the signing of forward Guido Carrillo.
The 26-year-old has struggled for regular football at the Stade Louis II this term and has previously worked under Saints boss Pellegrino before during their time at Estudiantes, and now it reportedly looks like a reunion is in the offing at St Mary’s.
And news of Carrillo’s likely arrival has stimulated quite a response from Southampton fans on Twitter, with it fair to say that they are split about the deal…

At the very least Carrillo has some outstanding attributes in the air, and in all honesty, that’s a quality we’ve missed since Pelle’s departure. It also provides #saintsFC with a focal point in the frontline, something we seriously lack with Gabbi/Long under Pellegrino.

It’s a huge risk that Les Reed and #Saintsfc are taking by putting their faith in an unknown player who sits on the bench in the French League, to turn this around. I don’t want to write Carrillo off before he comes, but his goal scouring record doesn’t excite me. Let’s see..
