Speaking to Football Insider, former Premier League midfielder Michael Brown has suggested that Leeds United defender Gaetano Berardi should extend his current stay – going on to laud the club overall and describe the support as ‘sensational‘.
Brown, who made 64 league appearances for Leeds over three seasons from the early to mid 2010’s (SoccerBase), currently delivers his verdict as an ex-Whites pundit and former Premier League midfielder for the likes of Spurs and Fulham – and his latest theory surrounding defender Berardi suggests that the Swiss full-back will sign a contract extension if given the opportunity. As revealed by Football Insider back in early February, Leeds are currently stalling on a new deal for the 31-year-old – waiting to see how their promotion chase goes before offering the player a new contract.
Berardi, who has played a grand total of 149 games at Elland Road, with 19 of them coming this campaign, has featured just once in Leeds’ last eleven games – putting question marks around his future at the club given the fact his current deal expires this summer. However, despite the club seemingly stalling, Brown insists that Berardi will sign on the dotted line if given the chance.
“Who would not want to be at Elland Road? I think everybody, it’s a great place to play, the support is sensational,” explained Brown to Football Insider.
“Everybody will want to try and be in that Leeds squad, the way they play football, that sort of feeling. I can’t see anyone not wanting to sign for Leeds United.
“It just depends on the manager, he obviously makes those decisions but they’ll all want to be at that football club.”
Indeed, whether or not Leeds do gain promotion back to the top flight this season, it may not be a bad idea to reward Berardi for his years of service at the club – with the Switzerland international perhaps serving as a solid back up option.
