West Ham’s problem is that they play a very slow, sluggish and predictable game. Newcastle couldn’t be accused of being over technical themselves, but what they did have in bundles was enthusiasm and desire.
Chris Hughton has done a pretty amazing job and it’s games like this that will define his return to the Premiership and decide if he and his men are good enough to stay in it.
Before they went down, Newcastle were guilty of playing some pretty dull football. But tough times in the Championship have fashioned them into something much more resembling a team that actually cares again. You can’t help but wish them well.
By contrast, when the second Toon goal went in, Avram Grant looked like a man who just woke up to discover he was Captain of a ship that was going under. Carlton Cole scored, but there is a reason his stock is so low and Carroll’s so high.
