Manchester United are preparing for a pivotal summer in the transfer market as they plan for life after Casemiro.
The Brazilian midfielder, a key figure in the Red Devils’ engine room over the past four years, has confirmed he will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season.
United have enjoyed a strong run of form under Michael Carrick, putting themselves firmly on course for Champions League qualification.
However, with Casemiro’s departure imminent, reinforcing the midfield has become a top priority. Alongside potential exits for players like Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee, United are targeting additions that can bring power and quality to their central areas next season.
Manchester United Eye Fernandes as Casemiro Replacement
According to Football Insider, Manchester United are monitoring West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes as a potential successor to Casemiro. Keith Wyness, a former executive at Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen, spoke exclusively about the situation, suggesting Fernandes’ future could hinge on West Ham’s Premier League survival.
Casemiro’s exit will bring an end to a four-year spell at Old Trafford in which he became a fan favourite. Wyness, who now runs a consultancy advising top clubs, believes Fernandes “won’t be going anywhere” if the Hammers manage to stay up.
On the latest edition of the Football Insider Inside Track podcast, Wyness said: “Look, he has been outstanding for West Ham. He’s done a great job, and he would be one that would normally be linked.
“This is all going to be tied to whether West Ham escape or not. If they escape and stay up, he won’t be going anywhere. I’m pretty sure they’ll keep him and help build a team around him. But I’m afraid if they go down, he’ll be one of the first ones to go, so he’s got great value.”
If West Ham survive relegation, Fernandes — recently called up to the Portugal national team for the first time and described as “incredible” by Portugal boss Roberto Martinez — is expected to remain central to Nuno Espírito Santo’s plans next season.
Should the club drop into the Championship, however, the midfielder could become a prime summer target for Manchester United as they look to reinforce their midfield and replace Casemiro.
