Marcus Rashford’s future remains one of the biggest transfer stories of the summer, but a permanent move to Barcelona now appears far from guaranteed.
The England international enjoyed an impressive loan spell in Spain, registering 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances while helping the Catalan giants secure another successful campaign.
Rashford has made little secret of his desire to remain at the club, while Barcelona boss Hansi Flick is understood to be a huge admirer of the forward.
However, with Barcelona already committing significant funds elsewhere, including the signing of Anthony Gordon, negotiations with Manchester United have become increasingly complicated.
Barcelona Deal Stalls
Barcelona have the option to sign Rashford permanently for around £26 million, but reports suggest they are unwilling to meet that figure in full.
Instead, the Spanish champions are believed to be exploring alternative structures, including a reduced fee or another loan arrangement.
Manchester United, however, are standing firm. The club are reluctant to accept a cut-price deal and have little interest in sanctioning another temporary move.
The situation has left talks at a standstill, despite Barcelona’s continued interest in keeping the 28-year-old beyond this summer.
With Rashford currently preparing for the World Cup, any breakthrough may not arrive quickly, adding further uncertainty to the transfer saga.
Rashford Facing Old Trafford Return
As things stand, Rashford is reportedly preparing himself for the possibility of returning to Manchester United for pre-season training, according to The Times.
The forward remains under contract at Old Trafford and, unless an agreement can be reached with Barcelona or another club, he will be expected back with the squad this summer.
United are keen to find a permanent solution, with Rashford’s reported £325,000-per-week wages representing a significant expense as Michael Carrick begins planning for the new season.
A number of clubs, including Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle United, have been monitoring developments, although Rashford’s preference has consistently been to remain in Spain.
For now, though, a surprise return to Manchester United is becoming an increasingly realistic outcome.
Just weeks ago, Rashford’s permanent move to Barcelona looked straightforward. Now, with negotiations stalled and neither side willing to compromise, the England international could find himself back at Old Trafford for the start of pre-season as one of the summer’s most intriguing transfer sagas continues.
