Newcastle United have maintained their stance that Martin Dubravka will not be leaving, despite interest from Paris Saint-Germain, as reported by The Daily Star.
The Magpies are reportedly working on a deal to sign Stanley N’Soki from PSG, though Dubravka will not be part of the deal to get the 20-year-old left-back.
Dubravka was one of Newcastle’s top performers last season, so it would be a blow to see him leave.
There were only six teams in the Premier League who conceded fewer goals than Newcastle’s total of 48 last season, with the Slovakia international being an integral part of that record.
The 30-year-old played every one of Newcastle’s games, keeping 11 clean sheets. He completed 95 saves, 42 high claims and 16 sweeper clearances throughout the campaign, while only making three errors leading to a goal (via Premier League’s official website).
This highlights how well-rounded his game was, hinting at why he was such an important player for Newcastle last season.
With the club having a change of manager in the summer, it would be a big disadvantage for Steve Bruce if he were to lose Dubravka – especially as his Sheffield Wednesday side’s foundations were built on defensive solidity, as they kept nine clean sheets and conceded just 17 goals during his 18 games in charge.
Newcastle are right to insist Dubravka will stay this summer, as it would be highly detrimental for the club if he doesn’t.
If the Slovakian were to leave it would be imperative to replace him with a good Premier League level goalkeeper considering how valuable he is to the Magpies backline, something which they likely couldn’t guarantee in the short space of time left this window.
