Liverpool are believed to be interested in signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong, according to The Mirror’s David Maddock.
The Lowdown: Klopp wants a midfielder
The Reds’ midfield has been decimated by injuries in recent weeks, with the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all out of action due to various issues.
As a result, fans have been urging the club to sign an additional central player, with Anfield boss Jurgen Klopp originally adamant they have enough options to cover their absences without dipping into the transfer market.
However, it appears the manager has experienced a change of heart. As quoted by Fabrizio Romano, the German admitted: “Yes, I am the one who said we don’t need a midfielder – and you were all right and I was wrong. Now we are going for a midfielder.”
The Latest: De Jong on the list
With Liverpool now on the hunt for an additional midfielder, Maddock has shared news of the possible transfer targets for Julian Ward.
As per the reliable journalist, writing for The Mirror, there have been ‘suggestions of interest’ in Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, PSG’s Leandro Paredes and, most excitingly of all, Barcelona’s De Jong.
The Verdict: Outstanding signing
Hailed a ‘spectacular player’ by Barcelona manager and club legend Xavi, De Jong’s arrival at Anfield would illustrate the Merseyside club’s pulling power in the transfer market.
According to FBRef statistics, the Dutchman’s play-style and ability compares to the likes of Real Madrid’s Luka Modric, Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan and Inter Milan’s Nicolo Barella – not bad company to keep.
Indeed, Netherlands teammate Virgil van Dijk is a huge advocate of De Jong’s, with the Reds star having claimed: “Frenkie, well… he always plays good in my eyes.”
Will Liverpool beat Bournemouth?
However, with the midfielder’s previous reluctance to make the switch to the Premier League, this could be a difficult signing for Ward to secure, and a huge wage packet may be required to get a move done so swiftly with the deadline looming on Thursday.
