After the highs of their UEFA Europa League success in the campaign of 2024/25, it has all gone completely pear shaped for storied London side Tottenham Hotspur – and even transfer links with soon to be Liverpool free agent and Scottish international skipper, Andy Robertson, demonstrates just how precarious a position they are in.
Everyone in the wider world of football remembers the managerial shenanigans and dire Premier League form when Ange Postecoglou took them to European glory, but the 2025/26 season has become even more of a shambles and for neutrals up and down the country it has made for great watching on Hesgoal TV. Daniel Levy has gone, Thomas Frank and the ridiculous appointment of Igor Tudor are in the rear view with Roberto De Zerbi now desperate to try and keep them from relegation for a second successive season.
As we edge towards the month of May, Spurs have lost 16 of their 32 top flight matches so far and they are sat in 18th place in the table, now two points from safety having dropped into the relegation zone. One point in the last six games is not just the worst form in the bottom three, it is the worst in the division.
With Anfield vice skipper and 92 capped international left back Robertson confirming that he is leaving Liverpool at the end of this season as the 32 year old goes in search of greater game time before he finally entertains hanging up his professional boots, Spurs have been the main side linked with having an interest in him – but all of the speculation rumour mill claims that surround their interest hinge on one simple fact – will they continue to be Premier League ever presents when the 2026/27 campaign kicks off?
If they are, it seems that Robertson will entertain them and any future offer that they may make – if not and they are set for next season in the second tier Championship, then they do not stand a chance. And why would they?
Robertson has nine major trophy wins to his name since making the move to Liverpool and ignoring the obvious joke that this is more than Spurs have had managers since Mauricio Pochettino left, with Serie A side and recent title winners Napoli – where fellow Scot Mr McTominay has received a second lease of life and they could team up – and Spanish La Liga side Atletico Madrid sniffing around, he will have very attractive options sitting on the table.
With a good few years left at the top of his game, a new culture and a new experience would be very appealing to him given everything that he has already achieved in the game, and to put it bluntly, it is arguable as to whether or not Spurs would even be a realistic proposition even if they do survive given the over all turmoil they are clearly in.
There will likely be plenty more links to Robertson as the next few games pass and ultimately we shall just have to see where he ends up come the next big kick off.
