Having improved his midfield and attacking choices with the additions of Stuart Armstrong and Mohamed Elyounoussi, while goalkeeper Angus Gunn has also been brought in from Manchester City, Mark Hughes has now reinforced the centre of Southampton’s defence.
Southampton have confirmed the signing of Jannik Vestergaard from Borussia Mönchengladbach with Sky Sports reporting the deal to be worth £18m.
The Saints have looked particularly light in central defence since Virgil van Dijk left for Liverpool back in January, and supporters will now be hoping for Vestergaard to add the sort of defensive solidity that can help their side avoid another relegation battle.
At a colossus height of 6ft 6″, £12.6m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Vestergaard will have no trouble in replacing van Dijk’s aerial presence and, all in all, has the attributes to be a very good Premier League defender.
A new striker, on top of Vestergaard and the rest of Southampton’s summer signings, would make this a very good transfer window for the club.
