A lot of Southampton fans have been quick to go to social media to praise goalkeeper Alex McCarthy after his performance in the 1-0 loss to Newcastle United on the weekend.
After making a mistake which led to a goal in the previous fixture in a 3-1 loss to West Ham, McCarthy definitely proved doubters wrong by making multiple great saves against Newcastle, including saving Matt Ritchie’s penalty to keep the score at 0-0 just before halftime. (BBC Sport) These saves led to one fan tweeting, “Quality Performance today Macca.”
Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl preferred Angus Gunn at the start of the season until Southampton were thrashed 9-0 by Leicester at St. Mary’s on the 25th October 2019. McCarthy, who made his first and only appearance for England in 2018, will hope that performances like the one on the weekend can possibly give him a chance of returning to the Three Lions squad for the upcoming European Championships this summer.
