The Tottenham fans in the Football Transfer Tavern had high hopes for him…
Nabil Bentaleb has had a strange career thus far.
The Algerian midfielder joined Tottenham in 2012, before being fast-tracked through to the first-team in 2013 – and the Spurs fans in the Football Transfer Tavern thought that they had a gem on their hands.
He was technical, he was quick, he was dynamic – he had it all.
However, last season was a bit of a poor one from the midfielder. He failed to get a regular look-in in the Tottenham first team, and of the 5 league appearances that he did make – he looked a shadow of his former self.
That led to a year-long loan move this season, with the Algerian moving on to Schalke 04 for the 2016/17 campaign.
The Tottenham fans in the Football Transfer Tavern were expecting him to be back at White Hart Lane next season – but that scenario is now looking increasingly unlikely.
Whilst the loan may only be a couple of months old – Schalke seem convinced. According to the Mirror, they are set to take up their option to buy the midfielder at the end of the season – signalling the end of Bentaleb’s Tottenham nightmare.
This one has led to a few mixed opinions in the Football Transfer Tavern.
The Spurs fans in attendance are well aware of his talents, and they think that he will be a star in the future; as he has proven with Schalke this season – so to lose a player like that is certainly disappointing.
However, off-the-field issues and a number of poor performances last season have really taken the shine off of his Spurs run – and many are pleased to simply get rid of him.
Our landlord thinks Spurs could live to regret this decision, though.
