Tottenham Hotspur welcomed Barcelona to Wembley on Wednesday night for a fixture which arrived at an unfortunate time for the club.
A lengthy injury list left Mauricio Pochettino in a difficult situation with regard to his team-selection and, with Eric Dier also in poor form, he opted to start Victor Wanyama alongside Harry Winks in central midfield.
Tottenham lynchpin Mousa Dembele was ruled out through injury and Winks was given a chance to shine for the club after struggling to earn a place in the starting line-up following his extended absence through injury last season.
Winks (valued at £13.5 million by Transfermarkt) earned esteemed praise for his performance at the Bernabeu last season in the group stage of the Champions League, but it’s fair to say the standard of his performance against the Catalan giants fell well short of his heroics against Real Madrid.
One of Tottenham’s most promising academy products had made just 2 starts prior to their clash against Barcelona, and his lack of match fitness certainly contributed to his lacklustre performance.
Winks was always destined to endure a tough evening against a formidable midfield trio of Ivan Rakitic, Sergio Busquets and Arthur, but the Spurs fans certainly showed no sign of sympathy for the 22-year-old in the aftermath of proceedings.
Here’s what a selection of the Tottenham fans on Twitter had to say about Winks’ performance…
Bang average – if we’d bought him, we would be disappointed with the investment…hope he comes good, but just don’t see it
