Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent has urged centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers to leave the club for good before the transfer deadline.
The 11-time USA international spent the first half of the season on loan at Stoke City but was recalled by Spurs just prior to the January transfer window (stokecityfc.com). According to TEAMtalk, he is set for another loan move for the second half of the campaign, with Derby County, Huddersfield Town and Middlesbrough all thought to be interested.
However, Bent feels that the time has come for Carter-Vickers to leave the club on a permanent basis, rather than going on loan once again.
Speaking about the American’s transfer situation, Bent told Football Insider: “I played against him when he was at Ipswich Town and he was okay. He’s a big, powerful kid but I’ve said it before, it gets to a time where it gets to a point where loans aren’t doing you any good – you can’t settle anywhere.
“You need to go somewhere, settle and then try to forge a career at that club and kick on. If you’re always on the move and never really settle, you’re not going to get the best out of yourself.
“He needs to go somewhere, sign permanently, play week in, week out and then go from there and if that means you have to go a league down then that’s what you have to do. First, you have to get the consistency not on the pitch but in your life.”
Bent definitely has a point here. Carter-Vickers is now 22-years-old and has already embarked on four loan spells away from Tottenham with Sheffield United, Ipswich Town, Swansea City and Stoke respectively.
Spurs are currently struggling defensively, indeed they have shipped 32 goals in the Premier League in just 24 games (BBC Sport). Despite that, they are still unwilling to give Carter-Vickers an opportunity to play in the team so he has to now question whether he will ever get his chance at the north London club.
At this stage of his career, perhaps he needs to settle at a club and play games on a regular basis in order to kick on. Going on loan to a new club every six months can’t be doing him much good at all in terms of settling in somewhere given the logistics of it.
Therefore, he may be better off asking Jose Mourinho if he can leave Spurs on a permanent basis before the window shuts on 31st January so that he can properly move on with his career.
