Tottenham Hotspur have completed the loan signing of midfielder Gedson Fernandes from Portuguese outfit Benfica (@SpursOfficial).
The 21-year-old joins on an 18-month loan deal, with Spurs then having the option of making it a permanent transfer. He becomes Jose Mourinho’s first signing as manager of the north London outfit and will hope to make a big impact in the team.
Fernandes is a versatile operator in midfield, indeed he has played in five different roles for Benfica this season despite making just three appearances in all competitions (Transfermarkt). However, he is predominantly a central midfielder and that is where he played in 30 of his 46 first team appearances last season (Transfermarkt).
He is therefore likely to be a replacement for Moussa Sissoko, who has been ruled out until at least April having had to have surgery on his medial collateral ligament in his right knee (tottenhamhotspur.com).
It would be fair to say that plenty of Spurs fans are absolutely delighted with their new signing, with many taking to Twitter to express their excitement and even claiming this is the real start of the Mourinho era. Here is what some had to say…
