Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho is keen to sign Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud before the transfer deadline, that is according to a report from Sky Sports Italy reporter Gianluca Di Marzio.
Spurs are currently looking for a striker to cover for the injured Harry Kane, with the likes of Krzysztof Piatek (The Sun) and Edinson Cavani (El Pais) having been linked as well as Giroud. The French striker has been out of favour at Stamford Bridge this season after falling behind Tammy Abraham in the pecking order, starting just two games in the Premier League and appearing just seven times in total, scoring one goal (Transfermarkt).
Giroud is out of contract at Chelsea in the summer and Frank Lampard admitted at the start of January that the 33-year-old could leave the club this month (BBC Sport). Inter Milan were reportedly interested in signing the frontman (Sky Sports) but it appears that they could now face competition from Jose Mourinho’s side who, according to Di Marzio, have offered the player an 18-month contract.
It would certainly be an interesting move given that the World Cup winner has played for Chelsea and Arsenal, two of Spurs’ major rivals. Added to that, Tottenham are battling with Chelsea for a top four position this season so it would be strange for them to allow their player to move across London.
In terms of the fans, it seems that if Spurs were to sign Giroud then it would split opinion. Some seem to think that regardless of his previous clubs he would still be a good signing, whilst others do not want him at all. Here is what some had to say on Twitter…
why do I keep seeing people saying no to this. I personally think it’d be a good signing🤷🏻♂️

Dont really know how to feel about this

He’s scored 10 league goals in the last 2.5 years!! Is this really the standard we are going for. Anyone that is okay with this has been well and truly beaten down by Levy and ENIC. Oh and he’s ex Arsenal and Chelsea #desperatemuch

At first I was upset, but thinking about it he will be playing with lloris, aurier, ndombele, sissoko all French speaking guys, he might do well

He is better than Piatek and he’d be nice cover for Kane. Fits the system. Seems like a good buy.

Please let this be a joke

I wouldn’t be against it. He scores goals and has proven at Woolwich and Chelsea he’s able to come in and do a job. Unfortunate what his links are but Gallas did alright here.
