Tottenham manager Antonio Conte may quit to join Manchester United if he is not backed by the north London club in the summer transfer window, according to former England defender Danny Mills.

The Lowdown: Conte wanted by PSG

According to a report by Football Insider last Friday, Paris Saint-Germain are monitoring the 52-year-old, as they fear that their current boss Mauricio Pochettino could become the next Man United manager.

Football Insider have claimed that the Italian is considering a swift exit from Hotspur Way after publicly sharing his disappointment with the club’s January transfer window.

The Latest: Mills’ claim about Conte

Mills, who regularly works as a pundit for BBC Radio 5 Live, believes that Conte could be off to PSG or Man United if he is not going to be backed by Spurs in the summer transfer window.

Speaking to Football Insider, the 44-year-old claimed:

“The Manchester United job will come up again and PSG could be on the cards.

“He’s not particularly happy anywhere he’s been. It’s a bit like Mourinho, he’s successful for a period and then falls out with people, whether that be the players or the hierarchy.

“We know what he’s like and there’s every chance it will be a difficult summer if he doesn’t get what he wants and what he feels he’s been promised.

“You look at it, Man United may need a new manager, Pochettino will probably leave PSG. All of a sudden that managerial merry-go-round starts to spin quite quickly.

“If one or two start to tumble then vacancies open up and it all starts to change very quickly.”

The Verdict: Would be a huge blow for Spurs

Losing Conte would be a huge setback for Tottenham as it is, but losing him to a top-four rival in Man United would be an even bigger blow.

Although Spurs have suffered in form in recent weeks, with Conte enduring his worst run in more than 12 years having suffered his third Premier League defeat in a row in the 2-0 loss to Wolves, the Italian has a strong enough CV to justify being given a sizeable transfer kitty to spend if he feels it is needed.

Described by current Spurs player Ben Davies as “a world-class manager”, this shows how highly some players regard the 52-year-old, who unfortunately has a history of abrupt exits from previous stints at Inter Milan and Chelsea.

Therefore, it would be a devastating blow to see him in charge at Old Trafford next season, but as Mills has hinted, it cannot be ruled out if the N17 hierarchy continue to frustrate Conte.
