Rio Ferdinand has said that if he was Harry Kane, he would leave the club so that he can win trophies.
The quotes follow another poor result for Spurs as they blew a two-goal for the second time this season away to Olympiakos in their opening Champions League game.
Spurs were going well after goals from Lucas Moura and Harry Kane, however, were pulled back by the Greek side thanks to goals either side of half-time (via BBC).
During the BT Sport’s coverage of the game, the former England international said that if he was in Kane’s shoes, he’d be off.
He said: “If you look at it as if you’re an individual, put yourself in like Harry Kane’s shoes, you’re saying “I’m off”. I’ve got to be honest with you, I’d be gone because I’ve not got time to hang around.”
“I could get injured next season, I could lose form etc. I want to win now. I’ve given most of my career to this club and they haven’t [won anything].”
“Yeah, you go very close, you can keep going very close, they’ve been close a few times of winning the league and then obviously the Champions League. It’s not enough.” (Source: BT Sport via The Metro)
As much as Ferdinand’s comments hurt may hurt Spurs fans, they are hard to deny. Indeed, the question remains, how long is it going to take the north London club to win a trophy? Mauricio Pochettino himself has spoken of the need to do exactly that as recently as August.
With Son Heung-Min, Kane, Christian Eriksen and Lucas Moura, the attack is there to match any team in Europe, as shown during the run to the Champions League final. The Lilywhites scored 11 goals across just six knockout stage games last season against the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Ajax (via Transfermarkt). Spurs also kept three consecutive clean sheets across the ties against Dortmund and Pep Guardiola’s side, showing the defensive personnel is also there to compete with the best of them.
Despite being the club’s most-hated rivals, Arsenal under Arsene Wenger won the FA Cup with arguably a worse squad than Spurs back in 2017. During the 2016/2017 Premier League season, Arsenal’s defence conceded more and scored fewer goals than us (via Sky Sports). This shows us that in theory, they were considerably weaker, however, they ended the season beating the Premier League champions in the FA Cup final, while Spurs went trophyless once again.
In truth, questions need to be asked over when Tottenham will win a trophy, and if it’s not this season, Ferdinand may well have a point. Dimitar Berbatov made similar comments this summer when talking to the Sun and, obviously, he’s a player who did exactly that.
