When Tottenham were awarded a penalty yesterday it was a perfect opportunity for them make ammends for being a party to pretty much unwatchable game of football so far.
A murmur went around the crowd. Who would step up? Surely not Defoe, they must have made him sign something by now, legally guarding against him making a mess of it again.
Keane was definitely in Scotland. Definitely. But he was only on loan. A brief shudder for a moment that Sir Pointalot might force his way from the shadows, adjusting his captian’s armband and step up to under hit it.
No. No, it was okay. Here comes Tommy. Cannon Fire Tommy. The man with the golden shot.
Golden shot? We got a fair bit of spitting, a nose rub, a dance and then the dampest squib of a passback. Tommy Steele could have done better and he’s seventy three.
So what about young Tom then? He’s had quite a run of first team appearances under Harry. On the up, then.
Well, no.
It’s been largely more of the usual, flattering to deceive. An England Under 21 who managed 33 appearances and yet only gained one full cap in the seniors. He’s now 23.
If that’s unfair, perhaps we should look at his strike rate this season, his season of improvement. One goal in seventy four shots over twenty four games played this season.
So then. Like Jenas before him we are left with another guy who promised loads but ultimately failed to deliver. Another guy with the sweetest of touches but who, in the final analysis just cannot cut the mustard.

Why don’t you compare his strike rate with say…Crouch, who is supposed to be a striker. Suddenly big Tom doesn’t look too bad…after all, he’s only played the bulk of the games that saw us sitting iin 4th for the most part of the season.
The only other comparison that might be useful is with ‘Are You Being Served’s’ John Inmann. But I think that would be unkind on John.
